Does tobacco affect the gums?

Patients that are smokers, and especially those that smoke heavily, have a clear tendency to develop a peridontal illness (gingivitis or peridontitis). Because of the vasoconstrictory effect of products derived from the burning of tobacco, the gums receive less blood and oxygen, at the same time as the defensive system against bacterial plaque is being weakened. This means that the bacteria is able to destroy the support elements of the tooth more quickly.

Therefore, if you are a smoker, it's advisable to regularly check your gums, even if they do not bleed.

What is a periodontal illness?

It is an inflammatory illness caused by bacteria that affect the deep tissue. It leads to the destruction of the bone and the periodontal ligament (the tissue fibres that attach a tooth to the bone).

Is peridontal illness common?

It is one of the most common illnesses in humans, especially in adults. Without treatment, periodontitis will continue developing and eventually destroy the tooth's support, resulting in its loss.

Symptons of peridontal illness

Periodontitis is usually painless, with many patients being unaware they are suffering from it.
The main symptons of periodontitis are:

  • Bleeding of the gums during brushing
  • Swollen or red gums
  • Tender gums
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pus between the teeth and gums
  • Bite changes...

Can peridontal illness have an effect on a patient's general health?

Yes, it can negatively affect patients with cronic illnesses like diabetes, heart problems, circulation problems, etc.

A link between peridontitis and the risk of a heart attack has also been shown, as well as the rise in likelihood of premature labour and the reduced weight of babies in pregnant women suffering from peridontal illnesses. It poses an added risk to patients with weakened immune systems.
