Specialists in conditions of the gums

Periodontrics is the dental speciality which deals with the study, prevention and treatment of diseases of the gums.

Depending on the degree of infected tissue, peridontal illnesses are called:

  • Gingivitis: in this case, the inflamation only affects the superficial gingival tissue (the gum), without loss of tooth attachment. If it is not treated, it can develop into periodontitis and cause irreversible damage.
  • Periodontitis: is the most advanced state of peridontal illnesses. That's to say, it causes a major effect on the tissues surrounding the teeth (gums, periodental ligament and alveolar bone). When there is loss of bone, this can not be reversed.

What does treatment consist of?

It is necessary to find out a patient's full medical record to know their past history and the possible illnesses that they could have influenced in their case.

The examination consists of a sounding (measure of certain points around the tooth) to evaluate the state and amount of gum, and to detect possible peridontal pockets, bleeding, difficulties, movements, etc. Periapical x-rays are done to check the percentage of bone that holds the tooth and possible localised bone loss (fault of the bone next to the tooth).

The complexity of treatment depends on the result of this examination. It always begins with the control of bacterial plaque in daily hygiene, and goes from scraping and root canal treatment to peridontal surgery.

How to keep gums healthy

To keep gums healthy it is essential to eliminate bacteria present in bacterial plaque with:

  1. Daily personal hygiene (control baterial plaque)
  2. Initial periodontal treatment (hygienic phase)
  3. Regular subsequent check-ups (maintenance)
